The Rigid Haul Truck course teaches students how to plan and prepare for haul truck operations, complete pre-start and post-operational checks, identify and control risks, operate the truck safely, and manoeuvre through different site conditions.

A rigid haul truck has a fixed chassis and does not bend or pivot in the middle. It is commonly used on mining, quarrying and large earthmoving sites where ground conditions are suitable. An articulated haul truck has a pivot point between the cab and the body, making it more suitable for uneven terrain and tighter work areas. Each machine requires its own separate competency.

A High Risk Work Licence is generally not required to operate a rigid haul truck. However, many employers and worksites require recognised training, such as RIIMPO338E, before allowing unsupervised operation.
